It’s that time of year again. We barely made it through a contentious election season, and now it’s time for the holidays.
And with the holiday season, for many of us, comes the most stressful time of the year. Will there be unpleasant political arguments over Thanksgiving dinner? Will I get everything done in time for Christmas morning? Will I gain 10 lbs from eating all the holiday treats in sight?
Here are a few suggestions to help you minimize your stress levels over the next 6 weeks.
There really is no substitute for gratitude during times of stress. Those of you reading this blog post have access to a computer or phone and internet access. You probably have an education and a roof over your head and food to eat and socks to wear when your feet are cold.
Write 3 things you’re grateful for in your journal each morning when you wake up. It’s an easy way to start your day with a positive, expansive attitude.
Move Your Body
Some people ask me how I have time to exercise every day, given that I have 4 kids and a business to run. The answer is, I would not be able to fulfill all my responsibilities effectively if I did not exercise regularly…I have come to depend on the mood and energy boost I get from regular exercise.
Exercise is the ultimate mood enhancer, energy lifter, and productivity booster. Make time for an hour of exercise each day and notice how things shift for you.
Make Self-Care a Priority
When mom is happy, everyone is happy. It’s a cliche because it’s true. So make a list of things that make you feel good. Do those things. Repeat.
I’m not talking about ignoring your responsibilities and running off to Bali. I’m talking about knowing what brings you pleasure and happiness, and making sure you attend to those things during your daily life. Buy yourself a cappuccino… wear an outfit that makes you feel fabulous and gorgeous, just because… listen to your favorite music while working or driving… sneak in a quick manicure during lunch.
We all tend to put ourselves last…especially during busy times of year like the holidays. Try putting yourself first this time, and see what shifts for you.
Relax…You’ve Got This
Go into every situation knowing that circumstances may not be perfect, but you are more than equipped to handle it. You’ve gotten through every holiday season up until now and the world hasn’t stopped spinning. You’ll get through this one too.
So if you come up short on gifts for your kids…or you burn the holiday roast…or you forget about the office holiday cocktail party….don’t sweat it. Forgive yourself and move on.
