Simple Summertime Snacks

Simple Summertime Snacks

The following is a guest post from momAgendaCOMM blogger Jennifer Sterling.

Every summer, I work at a camp teaching nutrition and cooking classes to children. While the camp serves breakfast, lunch and snacks, more than half of the children are forced to bring their own lunches and snacks because they have one or more food allergies. As the parent of a child with food allergies, I know what it’s like to try and fill a lunchbox with meals and snacks that are safe for your child, but won’t make them feel alienated.

Here are some of my top picks for summer camp friendly, allergen-free lunch box snacks:

1.   Original Black Bean Beanitos Beanitos are a great way to add more protein and fiber into your child’s diet. Made of black beans and brown rice, they are a healthy alternative to conventional fried potato chips.

2.   GoGo Sqeez Fast Fruit My son loves applesauce, but he loves it even more when it comes in a squeezable tetrapak. They’re perfect for small hands, are so portable and convenient that you don’t even need to pack a spoon!

3. Enjoy Life Foods Chewy Bars Granola Bars are the ultimate lunchbox snack, but many of them are made in facilities with wheat and nuts. Enjoy Life has created several bars that are free of the 8 most common food allergens. My favorite is Sunbutter Crunch. They’re delicious and contain almost 10 grams less sugar than most conventional granola bars.

If you’d prefer homemade snacks, try these 6 Ingredient Granola Bites (yields 10-12 bites).
